ALL ABOUT ME!

Dear Parents,

The Half Notes have done an amazing job settling into our classroom.  The children are beginning to learn our classroom routines.  It is so exciting to watch the children make new friendships and see how they begin to negotiate the use of the toys.

They all participated in making "Mat Man" a figure representing a person, constructed of wooden shapes.  Then then, each drew their own self portrait, which adorns our classroom bulletin board.  They were all so proud of their accomplishments.  They also created and decorated stars with mirrors on them.  Then they used the mirrors to look at themselves and to describe what they saw.

The children enjoyed listening to stories which were "All About Me."  We had some great discussions about ourselves such as, what color hair and eyes we have and our favorite activities.  Some of the stories we enjoyed listening to were: First Day of School, by Anne Rockwell, Friends at School, by Rochelle Bunnett, and I like Me, and ABC Like ME, both by Nancy Carlson.

The children also seemed to love singing songs, playing instruments, and dancing.  We are in the process of creating a classroom song book called "This Song is All About Me."  Some of the new songs we learned this week are: "Make New Friends but, Keep the Old," "I am Special," and "The More We Get Together."
Finally, the children have enjoyed participating in music class with Lisa.  Some of the highlights were: Making rhythms with rhythm sticks, singing and dancing.

In Mandarin this week with Yuting, the children learned some of the colors such as: Blue (lan se), red (hong se), and yellow (huang se).  She taught them how to say "How are you?," (ni hao)  and a  new song - "If you're Happy and You Know It Clap your Hands (pai pai shou) and Stomp your Feet" (duo duo jiao).

We concluded our week by making English Muffin faces.  We spread peanut butter (school safe and nut free) on an English muffin and added bananas, raisins and chocolate chip eyes, a nose and a mouth.  I am not sure if the children had more fun making them or eating them.
