ALL ABOUT APPLES!

 Dear Parents,
We introduced our unit on apples by reading the "Little Red House."  The story is about a boy who searches for a little red house with no door, no windows, and a star inside ( a copy of the story has been placed in your child's cubby).  Some of the other stories the children enjoyed listening to were: Seed to Apple, by Anita Ganeri, How do Apples Grow, by Betsy Maestro, and Apples Here, by Will Hubbel.

The children learned the life cycle of an apple.  They have been practicing putting the life cycle pictures onto the flannel board. They now know the stages, which are: seed, seedling, tree, bud, flower, and finally the apple.

We all took part in an apple taste test.  The children each tasted a macintosh apple, a granny smith apple, and a golden delicious apple. The results were:  three people liked the golden delicious apple, four people liked the macintosh apple, and four people liked the granny smith apples.

The children created their own apple trees. They first painted the tree tops with green paint, using a loofah sponge.  Then they made the tree trunk by gluing on branches, leaves and twigs, which they collected outside.  The children then added various colored apples to their trees.  The results were spectacular.
We added the trees to our Science, Math, and Social Studies board along with the apple pattern sheets the children have been working on.  They also learned about creating patterns by putting red, green, and yellow apples in an order such as red, green, yellow, red green yellow, etc.  The children now know that a pattern is a design that repeats itself.

The highlight of the week was when Corey, from Creative Creatures, visited our school with a plethora of animals. Some of the animals he brought were: A corn snake and a python snake, a chinchilla, a tortoise, an alligator, a large lizard,  a flying squirrel and a bunny rabbit.  The children were so excited when Corey let them pat and touch all of the  animals.  I am not sure who got more excited about the animals, the teachers or the children.

Other Areas of interest:

We also celebrated Conrad and Antonio's fourth birthdays.  Thank you to both of their parents for the delicious treats.
Happy Birthday Antonio and Conrad!

We concluded our week by making delicious apple sauce with the Quarter Note Class.  The children loved using the "magic apple peeler." They got so excited every time they turned the handle on the peeler as the apple was being peeled and sliced at the same time.

Love,

Ms. Bonne and Ms. Barbara
